ELS began through a 14 year old boy’s football accident in Chennai. At the age of 12 Donald David gave his heart to the Lord after hearing a missionary speak on John 14:6. Two years later Donald met with an accident and became an invalid for several years.
During this time while reading about how D.L.Moody had commenced the Moody Colportage Association to provide good, inexpensive evangelical books, God spoke to Donald that He wanted him to do the same thing in India. Donald accepted the challenge and slowly recovered.
God opened a way for Donald to take literature training in Christian Literature Crusade, London. The faith policies of the mission challenged Donald which led him to offer himself wholly in God’s hand.
In 1946 a bookshop was started in Chennai in a small rented room. That was the beginning of ELS. God blessed the work and in 1954 ELS was registered in Chennai under the Societies Registration Act.
God has blessed the vision of Donald David and the work that began in 1946 as a one room shop, today has twenty one centers in nine states of India – Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab, Delhi, Assam, Secunderabad and Pondicherry. This is the Lord’s doing and it is marvelous in our eyes.
